Natural Pool Restoration, East Sussex

Creating a soft, beautiful and natural swimming area in a beautiful Sussex country home, to be enjoyed with a deeper connection to nature.

The swimming pool was originally surrounded by grey brick and concrete walls, and never felt joined to either the listed house or the beautiful natural gardens that surrounded it. We set out to soften the area and transform it into a haven of its own, where one could relax on a summers day and feel connected to their surroundings.

We undertook significant groundworks, removing all the existing brick, allowing for soil to be brought back to life. We sowed native wildflowers bringing in a new richness of colour and creating habitats for biodiversity. The wildflowers were left to grow tall to provide privacy from the rest of the garden.

We also built raised beds from reclaimed railway sleepers following a soft curved line around the back wall. In these, different Mediterranean plants such as aloe Vera were planted, perfect for soothing one’s skin after a long day in the sun. We also planted a large mix of herbs and spices to be picked for accompanying cocktails and juices or used in the kitchen.

Overall the area was transformed, removing the feeling of separation between the home and the gardens and creating a new natural haven of its own. We and the family are so happy with the result of these works and how they brought the property
